Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. While a small child, Ford battled obsessive/compulsive disorders and anxiety caused by the word association. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that the school was not suitable for her. Ford then applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring for Doctor Who. Ford's first appearance on television was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be found on TV in shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate was first noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
